Totally agree with all of those, including the Machinist. WOW.

Van, you totally forgot Laurel Canyon - Christian Bale, Kate Beckinsdale, Frances McDormand. AND Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse!!!

Seriously Van, you would love Laurel Canyon if you like both Sparklehorse and Bale.

I'm not giong to lie, I can sing every single Newsies song. From 5-12 years old, it was undebateably my favorite movie. My friends and I actually did a theater project for "Carrying The Banner" in 7th grade.

I just bared my soul to you people.

I used to watch Newsies with my friends at our cast parties after theatre productions in high school.  My high school career was a bit more tame than some of you others around here...

I prefer a different Christian Bale movie scene to reenact...the Susudio is great, but no torture.

Seriously. Who voted for Batman? I'm more of a Marvel fan, but what planet do you live on if you think a reclusive, latent billionare has a chance against an alien from Krypton? Seriously, bring some of that to ACL, I'll smoke it with you.

You're becoming my new favorite person around here with all the shared pop culture references...only I no longer know if I'm more of a DC or Marvel fan these days.  Does the Vertigo imprint count as DC?

What is the Vertigo imprint? I thought she was part of Marvel? Regardless, she's a supersonic babe.

I also used to have a crush on Josie of ****cats fame.

Nope, Vertigo is DC's line of "mature" comics, i.e. books for those of us geeks who never grew out of reading comics but are too old to care about seeing Lex Luthor fight Superman for the 8,379th time.  It's where stuff like Hellblazer (AKA John Constantine, if someone cool like Clive Owen had portrayed him instead of that doofus Keanu), The Sandman, Watchmen, Fables, Y:The Last Man and V For Vendetta come from. It's responsible for many of the very best comics I've ever had the pleasure of reading.  They're the HBO of the comics world as far as high quality and adult subject matter goes.

Okay, serious "Batman is only a man" question.

Isn't Batman better than Superman because he is only a man?  If you can be that badass of a super hero without having any real super powers, I think that would trump actual super powers any day.

I'm a girl, I clearly don't know anything about this stuff

I thought you meant her. I've never heard of the DC Version.

You agree that the Marvel universe kicks booty. At the risk of sounding mainstream, RHL, do you watch Heroes?

Oh, absolutely.  I waited for a while to see if it was gonna wind up in the cancellation pile last year, but the good word of mouth and ratings kept climbing upwards...and then when the first 6 episodes aired on the Sci-Fi Channel as a marathon last December or so I jumped on board.  They do a great job of stealing from much-loved plotlines and characters from both DC/Marvel and other geeky film/TV favorites and blending it altogether into something fresh and exciting.  I dunno if it'll ever match the goofy greatness of Buffy and Angel, but it's still a very satisfying bit of escapism.  If nothing else it gave Lost the creative kick in the ass that show needed to jumpstart their storylines and quit drag-assing along as the viewers shifted their loyalties from them to Heroes.  Lost was in peak condition by the end of this season!)

The only Marvel titles I read at this time are Daredevil and the Ultimate universe titles in Trade Paperback (the ones that restarted the storylines for Spidey, Fantastic Four, Ultimates, X-Men, etc).  I don't normally read any of the current DC heroes' books either.  I'd been reading superhero books since age 5 -- sad but true -- and I just lost track of their never-ending soap opera somewhere around 1988 and moved over to the more horror/supernatural/offbeat side of Vertigo comics instead.  Those books are more than enough for me at this point, although I still wind up seeing every single damn comic book movie that comes out eventually despite how crappy most of them have been as of late.  (My favorite superhero-type flicks, though, are Batman Begins, Hellboy and X-Men 2, just for the record.)

THAT is what I was looking for! Some Comic Appreciation/Relief. Nice. So far, I've got:

  • Peter = Rogue
  • Nathan = Angel
  • Claire = Wolverine (I mean, they even had her going to Canada!)
  • Hiro = Nightcrawler? (Teleportation/not time travel, but his caracter is also somewhat pious)
  • Isaac Mendez = The Preacher (right down to painting the future)
  • Nicky = Hulk?
  • DL = Nightcrawler
  • The cop (forget is name?) = Slimmed down Professor X.
  • The Institute = Weapon X
  • The new girl (shapshifter) = Mystique

They've borrowed so heavily, but something tells me they have the license from Stan Lee, because he appeared in an episode.

I'm right there with you on Lost, but I've really spoiled it on this board before, so I should refrain, but here's a blog (really a compilation of blogs) that I found that really helped with the Lost / Philosophers / Metaphysics ties that we have and will see in the future.

Ditto, and X3, and Sin City (Frank Miller counts, right?). Also, if you're looking for some more esoteric, but seriously enlightening comics, I've just gotten into the Star Wars EU through Dark Horse Comics. I'd be happy to share them.

I have officially doomed any credibility that I had from sticking around on this board. But wtf? We'll get drunk and forget about all that, come September (unless we play drunk Trivial Pursuit).

Dude.  Christian Bale was in Swing Kids, too.  I used to LOVE that movie (just to stray from this Heroes/comics discussion I can't tap into).

One year my mom bought me Swing Kids on VHS for Hanukkah.  Oh, the irony!
