Thanks for the welcomes and the info, very kind.

Looking forward to previewing some of these then, thanks borracho.  Usually just buy the lot, but I don't have a small fortune to blast on the entire Dave Matthews back catalogue alone!  Plus there are so many amazing acts that are fairly new to me, I'm gonna have to brush up for October; just as well I always loved homework...

Live Trax Vol. 8 is a favorite of mine.  If you start with a studio album, I'd say you can't go wrong with Crash.  That was pretty much a standard issue cd when I was in college.

Chewing my way through Crash just now.  Also bought Everyday - Space Between I think only really worried the lower realm of the UK charts, but definately rings a (pleasant) bell..

Keep the recommendations coming, thanks.

Let me start off by saying FREAKING GREAT lineup this year...I think the Bjork/Muse year was a good one too...

Without stearing this thread into a different direction, I wanted to quickly also ask for some direction with two Bands I want to study up on...

Ben Harper & Sonic Youth...

Like a previous post, I know they have several albums out but a quick list of 5-7 must-know songs would be great... I don't wanna see the groups without knowing some of the best songs... Thanks!

Harper will be appearing/touring with his new band Restless 7, so you should get that album since I doubt he'll be playing a ton of his older stuff.

Sonic Youth was discussed the other day, but I can't really lend much knowledge there and I don't remember which thread that discussion was in, sorry.

Sonic Youth is over my head.  I understand they have enjoyed critical acclaim, but I just don't get it at all. Just lots and lots of noise/feedback.

A little late in responding, but I'll echo Borracho's recommendations on DMB albums (Crowded Streets, Crash, Under the Table).  And if their show this week in Phoenix was any indication, they still play a healthy amount of material off those albums.  I was a big fan back in the mid-to-late-90's, and probably saw them 8 or 9 times back then, but kinda lost interest starting with Everyday.  The Phoenix show was the first time I had seen them in over a decade, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much of the older material they still play.  Funny that after a 10+ year hiatus, I'll be seeing them 3 times this year (including Outside Lands and ACLF).  No disrespect to Leroi, but Jeff Coffin is phenomenal on the sax.  Not sure when they added the trumpet player, but he's amazing as well.

Agreed. No point at all in learning his back catalog as his show is entirely the relentless7 stuff and a cover of "Under Pressure". Here is a pretty typical set list:

“Number With No Name”
“Shimmer and Shine”
“Lay There and Hate Me”
“Better Way”
“Fly One Time”
“Keep It Together”
“Dressed in Black”
“Skin Thin”
“Boots Like These”
“The Word Suicide”
“Up to You Now”
“Faithfully Remain”
“Under Pressure”
“Serve Your Soul”

There's nothing special about Relentless 7.  Their set at JF was quite generic, and the drummer is annoying.

Apologies if I'm in the "wrong" thread or whatever (I'm really not good at this message board malarkey!) but can a Dave Matthews fan tell me where to begin please?  I've really liked the few *big* tracks that have listlessly floated their way to the UK; but don't know where to start with the album back-catalogue.  Such a vast body of works to choose from!  To be honest I don't wanna buy everything they've every done, so I was hoping some proper fans could shunt me in the right direction.

So my question is:  Is there a Dave Matthews album or two that would give a similar "what to expect live" or "this is the best Dave Matthews overview".

Cheers!

Eel,

As at least one other person has recommended, all of the DMB albums are available free to listen on their website (http://www.dmband.com). Either click the music note in the upper right hand corner for a thumbnail view of all of their albums, or click "sounds" to scroll through an iTunes style flip view.

Before These Crowded streets is by far my favorite of their studio albums. I really recommend listening to the live CDs, though; Live Trax 3 and 8 are probably my two favorite. Unfortunately, those are both older recordings, and because DMB tends to rotate through their material pretty frequently (they've never played the same setlist twice, and they have a huge back-catalog of songs to churn through), you're unlikely to hear that exact material at ACL.

If you wait until August or September, I can give you some recommendations for songs that are currently getting a lot of play and that we'll probably hear at ACL. I'd also expect that they'll play a lot off their new album that is coming out in June.

And if you're really adventurous, DMB allows people to tape and trade bootlegs of the concerts. The hardcore fans use the site http://www.dreamingtree.org to trade torrent files of concerts, so you can grab some of their most recent shows and check them out. (All of it is totally legal).

For Sonic Youth, my favorites are Goo and Dayream Nation.

As someone above me correctly commented, be forewarned... they are a lot of noise.  Kind of an acquired taste.

And Ben Harper will be playing primarily the new album, since he is touring with his new band that made the new album with him.  (As opposed to the Innocent Criminals, who backed him before.)

Hey there Mind The Gap,

Thanks very much for the comprehensive insight.  As a relative newbie to DMB, looking at the back-catalog is fairly overwhelming so I appreciate the info.  Will definately have a look at the live stuff and the bootleg swap is an inspired idea.  I'll certainly swoop back onto the radar in a few months fo further recommendations, thanks a lot.

Seeing as this is the place for celebration about the line up, is anyone else really excited about the bands they know nothing about?  The thing I love best about festivals is the atmosphere, the people, the banter and most of all the opportunity to check out entirely different music - not just the online sales recommendations that the good people at iTunes/Amazon will groom you into...

I've lost count of the amount of times I've seen the act I came to see blown off the stage by a cheeky unknown; can't WAIT to see what ACL has on offer.

Actually, just realized I forgot to point you to http://www.dmbstream.com After you sign up for a free username, you can stream bootlegs of the live concerts without having to mess around with bittorrent or download them. The recent show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas is a particularly high quality recording (2009-05-09).

Hey, if your still looking for some DMB, check out http://music.aol.com/radioguide/rock-radio Its free online radio stations.  They have an all DMB station, they play a wide variety of his tunes.

They also have an all Pearl Jam one also(my favorite) they play a good mix of studio/live/rare/side project stuff.

A Jam band station, acoustic station, and instrumental station are also available among many others.

Definetly worth a look.
