OK, I previously mentioned AIC touring with Velvet Revolver and playing Dallas, which I will def be getting tix to.  Now, AIC announced that during off nights they are going to headline special acoustic/unplugged shows!  So far they have announced 4 such dates: Milwaukee, St. Louis, Austin and New Orleans.  Pre-sale tix onsale tomorrow at 10:30 Central:

http://www.aliceinchains.com/store/category.aspx?id=tickets

OK, they are kinda pricey at $50, but I'm not going to miss the Austin show (it's at Antone's - what's the capacity there?)... Alice in Chains Unplugged is one of my all-time favorite albums.  In fact, I've often said that if I could have been at any concert in history I would have been at that show (no joke).  Granted, Layne has passed on, but this still promises to be a kick-ass show.  Plus, it's on a Saturday so I don't have to sweat leaving work early etc.

Doubt I can get anyone to commit to the show by tomorrow AM, so I'll probably buy a couple of tix and if anyone is interested in going let me know.

Antone's holds around 600-700 people.

I was kinda hoping VR would come to Austin - I'm considering traveling to Houston for it (I'm a bigger VR fan than an AIC fan).

Sparta just announced they're opening those VR/AIC shows as well, so it's not a bad lineup all things considered.  Thanks for sharing that unplugged info with us, Jay, as I had no idea this was coming up.  I don't think I'd be willing to blow $58 per ticket + whatever other shipping charges they've tacked on, though (especially since Layne can't be involved for obvious reasons), because Sept/Oct is already filled with costly entertainment events I'm committed to.

That dude is William DuVall (from Comes With the Fall), who I saw play w/ Jerry Cantrell on his solo tour a few years ago.  He's a good guitarist/singer and not a bad "placeholder."  Granted, you can't replace Layne, BUT I have always been of the mindset that Cantrell was more intregal to AIC than Staley was.  Jerry wrote (or co-wrote) 95% of their songs, sang lead vocal on lots of the songs and harmony on almost every song.  Now sure, it won't be the same, but I think that it's not quite "karaoke".

Alice in Chains isnt the same without the great Layne, I love AIC, is one of my fave bands ever, but let it rest!!! Its like tne new Queen band, or INXS! they had their moment of glory, now let them rest!

Well, this brings up an interesting debate.... why does the "band" live or die with the lead singer.  I would argue that Cantrell, Inez, Kinney and some other "lead singer" are more "Alice in Chains" than Axl Rose + 4 schmos are "Guns N Roses".... esp. in this case b/c of Cantrell's importance in the band, as I described above.  I think you have to look at it case-by-case though.  As for Queen and INXS, I agree with you on those points.... to me, Freddy Mercury was too integral to Queen for it to be Queen w/o him (even with Brian May).  INXS is a joke w/o Michael Hutchence.... I can't even name the other members.  Please discuss.....

Layne had a very distinct voice that WAS Alice in Chains... the band was arguably secondary to his voice. Many bands out there don't rely as heavily on their singer to be their focal point, musically or visually... but good for the remaining members - they seem to be having fun doing this, but it will never be Alice in Chains as far as i'm concerned...

Jerry Cantrell and Layne were equally AIC. It's not AIC if one, or the other isn't there. I'd have no interest in seeing this "tribute" band. I agree with your "GNR" point though Jay. That's not GnR either.

I think I'm with bluesrocker44 on that description.  AIC w/o Layne becomes Jerry Cantrell's AIC, whereas GnR went bye-bye circa 1993 or so, never to return.  Axl's lost on planet botox at this point.

jay makes a good point.  I saw the "reunion" tour last fall and it was actually pretty good.  The new guy isn't bad at all, and sounds a LOT like Layne - so much so that I thought they were using a backing track at times.  I realize you can't replace Layne, but Jerry kind of takes the reins in the performance so Layne's absence is somehow less noticeable.

Ironically, same amount of times. Once at Lolla 3, which was fantastic.

I love Cantrell, esp. as a songwriter. Not into this reunion at all.

I used to love AIC; just like I loved Mad Season (great album if you don't know it).  The reason why was Layne Staley - sure the music was good, but he made both bands.  Without him, AIC is a shell of itself.  It's like seeing the new Doors with that guy from the Cult.

Exactly, the voice of Layne was...*goosebumps* and yes I agree Jerry Cantrell was as important as was Layne, but I dont know, to me Layne was like the spirit of the band, always creepy, sick in the head, swinging moods, the whole package, plus his voice! And about Queen well... I guess there wont be any other Freddie Mercury in centuries

OK, so the Austin show @ Antone's was Saturday, and I have to say it was fantastic.  Band sounded great, the set list was killer and the club was tiny so everyone was close.  We were actually right on the "rope" on the left (if facing) side of the stage where the band entered so they walked by us 4 + times which was kinda cool.  As a plus, Scott Weiland showed up and sang "Angry Chair" with them which was an added bonus.  Place was absolutely packed.  Here's the set list:

Don't Follow
Heaven Beside You
Brother
I Can’t Remember
Nutshell
Killer is Me
Sludge Factory
Love Hate Love
No Excuses
Down in a Hole
Angry Chair (w/ Scott Weiland)
Got Me Wrong
----------------------
Curtains (Elton John Cover)
Squeeze Box (The Who Cover)
Would?
Rooster

Saw Livia there too (who had a VIP badge, natch).

Lastly, only downer of the night was "comedian" Craig Gass who was the "host" of the show and did about 15 minutes of stand-up prior to AIC, which consisted of a bunch of lame-o impressions.  Out of place and not funny.  You know a comedian doesn't have a lot of material when he relies on statements like "let's hear it for alcohol" to get a rise of out of the crowd.  Ugh.

Sounds like you had a great time Jay. Did Craig do his Kinison imitations?

Unfortunately, yes.  And his Adam Sandler, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Gilbert Gottfried, Al Pacino, Christopher Walken..... really some groundbreaking stuff.
